Active Service Testament 1914

This paperback edition of The New Testament was published for British soldiers serving during World War I. Most military Bibles and Testaments are small - like this copy, with many printed on India paper to keep them lightweight and suitable for carrying in pockets and knapsacks.

Millions of Bibles and New Testaments were distributed by the British and Foreign Bible Society in World War One. Many would have remained unread, or thrown away, sent home as souvenirs or destroyed in battle. However the Bible rapidly became the most read book in the trenches and it provided comfort, inspiration, strength and hope to vast numbers of British Commonwealth, German, French and Russian soldiers.

The Bible is part of the Arnhoff Bible Collection at the Nordic Bible and Book Museum.
