Esperanto is a constructed language created by Ludwik Zamenhof. As opposed to other languages, Esperanto is not a national or regional language, but rather a language aimed at promoting global understanding and peace. The language is supposedly easy to learn and politically neutral.
Esperanto comes from the pseudonym "Doktoro Esperanto", which signifies "Doctor hopeful", a name Ludwik Leizer Zamenhof used to publish his proposal for an international language in 1887. It is estimated that more than 1000 people speak Esperanto as their mother tongue globally. It is unknown how many people speak it as a second language, but it is supposedly between 60 000 and a couple of million people.
